What time is the ‘best’ time to exercise?

FIVE MINUTES WITH FRANKIE

best time to exercise, fitness and exercise tips, fitness blog, personal trainer blog

A recent study on exercise physiology found that women who exercise in the morning tended to have reduced abdominal fat and blood pressure compared to those who exercise later in the day, whilst men had increased fat oxidation (break down of fatty acids), and reduced systolic blood pressure and fatigue.

Whilst that is a definite win all around, the fact is, the best time to exercise is totally dependent on your individual needs!

In the past I’ve exercised at all different times of day to fit around work and the million other things I have going on, as I’m sure have you! Nowadays I mostly workout early in the morning because:

  1. I don’t tend to sleep well, and I’m not one for hitting the snooze button, so why not jump out of bed before sunrise and get it done. Early bird catches the worm, right?!

  2. I find that I make much healthier food choices throughout the day if I’ve worked out first thing. Why make the sacrifice of an early morning alarm only to ruin it by scoffing a burger and some fat fries?

  3. It helps wake me up. Yeah, I might start off a little sluggish but by the end of each workout I feel fresh, and raring to get on with the day. On mornings when I don’t work out it takes me much longer to get into my daily stride and I feel like half a person. Bad times.

  4. It gives me a warm, fuzzy glow inside. Oh, ok I’ll admit it, I mean it makes me feel smug. Yep, that’s right and I’m not even ashamed to say it. I spend the whole day feeling extremely pleased with myself. Go on girl, you deserve that high five!

  5. It gives me the gift of time! How often do we say Í haven’t got time’? Well if I miss a little bit of sleep to exercise, it means I’m saving time do other things later in the day and I’m not stressing about when I’m going to fit everything in. Win, win!

Provided you make the time, at some time, it really doesn’t matter when you do it. Exercising morning, noon or night is going to benefit you in multiple ways. Just remember to warm up properly, especially if early morning workouts are your thing. Cold, just out of bed muscles need a little love and care before being put through their paces so get them moving and grooving before they start pushing and pulling!
